My First Home Project with Just in Time for Foster Youth

We are hosted a shopping day for Just in Time for Foster Youth’s My First Home program on December 9, 2023. Just in Time for Foster Youth's (JIT) is a San Diego nonprofit based in Mission Valley that focuses on engaging a caring community to help transition age foster youth (ages 18-26) achieve self-sufficiency and well-being.

The My First Home service assists youth in creating a place they can call home, which is fundamental to creating their foundation for success. Youth attend their Distribution Center for a shopping day, where they can select everything they need to create a safe, comfortable and reliable environment they can be proud of. These items can include dressers, nightstands, dining tables and chairs, desks, dish sets, utensils, bedding, lamps, and much more.

Our club fundraised $1000 and secured a matching grant from Rotary District 5340 of $1000 to help purchase 6 new couches for Just in Time’s Distribution Center. We compiled 18 volunteers from our club members, friends, and family to serve 3 deserving former foster youth.

Walk to End Polio Now

We host an annual fundraiser for Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign to eradicate polio. Since October 2022 we have hosted an annual fundraiser walk in Balboa Park where we were joined by Rotarians from clubs throughout San Diego. We walked to 5 of the nearby bridges and ended the event with a breakfast burrito lunch.

International Projects

Tepehua Community Center

Water Project

Our club donated $2,500.00 to the Tepehua Community Center in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico for water systems in the village of approximately 7,000. This barrio is one of the poorest in the state. They get water for one hour daily and it is often dirty, also full of lead. Many deaths due to renal poisoning among the very young and older residents. This water purification system allows them clean purified water at an affordable cost. Costs are just enough to maintain this system.

Maternal Health Program

The donation from Mission Valley Evening Rotary to the Maternal Health program of the Tepehua Community Center, was spent on materials needed for the protection of family planning, pre/postnatal care for the Mother and Child and follow up care and education of all.

One of the most important things arising from this program is the lowering of the mortality rate of the Mothers and baby's, especially those who are born at home. Pre/postnatal care is so important. Another is that mothers are bringing their sexually active teenage daughters in for check ups and education regarding their bodies, how to protect against venereal diseases and respect for self.

Silvia Flores, registered nurse and midwife started this program for us about 8 years ago or more, when the woman's choice for her own body was unheard of, although retired she is still an activist for women’s rights.  Her legacy lives on with us, as the size of the family is getting less, and the family units are getting stronger through educating the young and supporting the woman.

We have been assisted in this program by many Rotary clubs including our own Chapala Sunrise.  It is the health of the mothers and the children that is a great concern in many countries of the world including the Western World, where the struggle for the protection of women and their rights are being challenged. We can play a great part in lifting the burden placed on the women in poverty, give her the power to limit the amount of children she can handle according to her socioeconomic level.
