Be a mentor to 1-4 teen/young adults with special needs, such as autism, while they learn to play music. Volunteer mentors provide encouragement, model expected group behaviors, give compliments, give directions, and help their mentees build friendships and practice social skills. Mentors are important because they help the students with special needs gain social skills (e.g. learning how to make eye contact, have a conversation, have self control, etc.) that are essential to living a meaningful life in their community.
No matter your level of musical experience, you'll have a great time shaking a shaker, playing a drum, signing along and much more. Before and after the group, volunteers assist with set up (unloading musical equipment, setting up chairs, music stands, music books, etc.), process with the volunteer team after (complete a journal entry about experience and rate mentee responses), and tear down (load equipment).

Operation Flags for Vets: Place Flags at Miramar National Cemetery
The Rotary 5340 District Military Coordinating Committee (DMCC) is proud to be sponsoring the inaugural “Operation Flags for Vets” at Miramar National Cemetery this Memorial Day weekend. In cooperation with the cemetery administration, members of Rotary District 5340 will be placing a small American flag at every gravesite to honor our fallen heroes. This effort is one that the cemetery has no funding or personnel to complete so they are excited to welcome Rotary to what will be a long-term commitment.
We need your help to accomplish this operation! We estimate that it will take between 200 and 300 volunteers to place the flags on Saturday and as many as we can get on Tuesday to remove and store them.
FAQ:
When to sign up: We are limiting the number of volunteers to 300 as to not to put a strain on the Miramar National Cemetery, parking, resources, and families that are visiting gravesites during the day. Please sign up early!
Can you send a group from your club: Yes! If your club would like to send a group of people, pick a coordinator, and list the participants in the information block on the form. Look for an email the week of May 20th providing details you’ll need to know. This will include a map of the cemetery, your section assignment, information about parking, and any other pertinent data.
Parking: There is plenty of parking at the cemetery, but we are encouraging carpooling on the day of the event.
Cost: There is no cost for this event! However, since we have committed to conducting it every year, we have arranged for the ability to donate. This would be a great way to participate if you can’t attend. We would appreciate your donation to help start funding to honor the additional 3,000 gravesites that are added annually at Miramar National Cemetery. This means more flag purchases, supplies, and offsite parking transportation as the number of volunteers increases. If you would like to contribute to offset costs, we have included a “DONATION” button on the website. Any amount is appreciated! We are grateful for those who donate to support this great community service to our military veterans and family members.
Please take a few hours to help us honor our fallen heroes alongside your fellow Rotarians on this most solemn of National Holidays. We know you won’t be sorry.

Model United Nations Conference
The Rotary Model United Nations Program is a partnership between the Rotary District 53040 Pathways to Peace Committee and students from San Diego County and Baja California. This experience is very similar to the situations encountered by actual delegates to the United Nations.
Students will strengthen their leadership qualities while applying their studies in such areas as history, geography, and science to practical real-world situations. Most importantly, they will learn how to peacefully resolve conflicts and reach consensus on various issues – critical tools to become peacebuilders and community leaders.
Our club sponsored teams from Madison High School who will be representing: USA, Canada, Mexico, and Burkina Faso. If you would like to attend to see the students in action, please contact Pauline Lim-Endresen at pauline@paulineandbjorn.com. The best time to come is in the morning on Saturday or Sunday. We secured a matching grant from Rotary District 5340 to help purchase household items for the foster youth that participate in the program and we’re recruiting 24 volunteers to help out. The time for this project is tentative and will be determined as the date nears.
Just in Time for Foster Youth's (JIT) is a San Diego nonprofit based in Mission Valley that focuses on engaging a caring community to help transition age foster youth (ages 18-26) achieve self-sufficiency and well-being.
The My First Home service assists youth in creating a place they can call home, which is fundamental to creating their foundation for success. Youth attend their Distribution Center for a shopping day, where they can select everything they need to create a safe, comfortable and reliable environment they can be proud of. These items can include dressers, nightstands, dining tables and chairs, desks, dish sets, utensils, bedding, lamps, and much more.
There are typically 6 participants attending a shopping day which requires the support of approximately 24 volunteers. Each participant gets assigned a team of volunteers to support throughout their shopping experience in the following roles:
1 Shopper (Total of 6 volunteers): Helping a youth select items on their wish list and ensure all the items are marked for movers. The shopper will also be taking notes on items selected by the participant.
2 Movers (Total of 12 volunteers): Once items are selected at the Distribution Center, the mover will move the items to a designated area outside and will help load furniture/household items into the moving vehicles, drive to the youth's home, and unload and move items into the youth's home. There is a lot of heavy lifting, and you must be comfortable with lifting heavy items.
1 Driver (Total of 6 volunteers): Help transport items using their SUV, pick-up truck, or a larger vehicle. Drivers do not need to arrive until 10am.
Banding Together Jam Session
Join our Community Service Chair Linda at Banding Together’s Jam Session in El Cajon. She volunteers there every Thursday during the 6-week program. Email us at mverotary@gmail.com so we can register you through our team on HandsOn San Diego.
