The speaker for this meeting will be Bogdan "Bogey" Matuszynski who will share about his experience as a Rotary Peace Fellow. In 2018 Bogey was awarded a fully-funded Rotary Peace Fellowship to study and earn a Professional Certificate in Conflict Management at the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand in 2019.
Bogey is the Founder and International Operations Manager of iServe, an international education company that fosters global citizenship through experiential education, mentoring, and skill-building based on needs/interest assessment. Bogey is also the Peace Chair for San Diego Coastal Rotary.

Our speaker will be Kim Musluski, a member of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club. Kimi will be presenting on the Thousand Smiles Foundation and her (and her club’s) work with the foundation. Thousand Smiles provides free maxillofacial surgery, dental treatment, and various associated procedures to children from financially challenged families in Mexico. The foundation is totally funded by donations including but not limited to Rotary International Grants, other foundation grants, Rotary Club donations, and personal donations. Thousand Smiles is completely managed and run by volunteers.

Club Meeting with Librarian Speaker

The speaker for this meeting will be Karen Reilly, Branch Manager of the Mission Valley Library since 2013. She received her Master’s in Library Science from UCLA, and has worked for the San Diego Public Library since 2006. She also has a law degree from the University of Minnesota, and has worked as a law librarian at the San Diego Public Law Library and the California Western School of Law Library. Before becoming a librarian, Karen worked as an attorney in the State of Minnesota, where she practiced in federal and state courts, as well as in the tribal court of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of new adult-sized fleece blankets for PATH. Please plan on bringing a cash or check for your membership dues ($125).

We usually meet on the first Monday, but our space will be unavailable in November since it is used for the election, so the meeting has been moved to Tuesday November 12.
Our speaker will be Brett Morey, Past President of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary and an active Rotarian for over 22 years. His talk, “Get More Out of Being a Rotarian” will inspire you to seek opportunities to serve at a global level including getting involved with the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena and perhaps join a Rotary Fellowship to connect with others around the globe. Many Rotarians in District 5340 have met Brett at one point or another as he served as Youth Service Chair for the District 2016-18 and has spoken at numerous District Conferences and events.

Club Meeting with District Governor Visit

Our speaker will be Rotary District 5340 Governor Dianne Crawford. Dianne joined Rotary in 1997 and is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Southeast San Diego where she has served as Club President, Board Director and Secretary. She has served as a member of District 5340’s Leadership Team for 16 District Governors in a variety of positions including Assistant Governor, Membership Chair, Strategic Planning Chair, Club Service Chair, New Club Development Representative, District Training Resource, Foundation Specialist and as a facilitator for the Rotary Leadership Institute and President Elect Training Seminar (PETS).
In her first District role as an Assistant Governor, she learned how she could use her professional experience in sales and business management as opportunity to serve. Her unique and creative approach to business, expertise in training and organization development, interpersonal skills along with her enthusiasm for “all things Rotary” has helped her make significant contributions that have improved District programs and club support. She has received multiple awards for her Rotary service including 2010/2011 District Rotarian of the Year for her contributions to district membership growth and key role in the formation of new clubs.
Dianne grew up in Connecticut and move to San Diego in 1979 when her husband Michael transferred to complete his last year of service in the Navy. Her son Regis and grandson Kingston are her pride and joy. She loves spending time with them and visiting her family at home on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean as often as possible.

The speaker for this meeting will be Joe Pisano, an award-winning artist, U.S. Naval Reserves Chief Petty Officer and martial arts instructor. He is known for unique artistic creations that blend canvas, metal, wood and paint into three dimensional tributes to the sacrifice, duty and honor of our military servicemembers and veterans. Working with the Resurrecting Lives Foundation, Joe helps raise awareness for and bring healing to veterans suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries and PTSD.

Our speaker program will be the student teams we helped sponsor to attend Rotary District 5340’s Model United Nations Conference in March. The 8 students from Madison High School will share how they prepared for the program, how they presented their side(s) of the issues, what their reaction was to the event, and how the program prepared them for the next step in their life journey. Their teams represented the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Burkina Faso.

The speaker for this meeting will be our own International Service Chair Arna Lewis. Arna will share about the Tepehua Centro Comunitario in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. Arna lived in Chapala and was a member of the Rotary Club of Ajijic. The Tepehua Centro Comunitario was established in 2010. Arna was especially passionate about teaching sewing skills to women there so they could become financially independent. This center was to enable the women and children in the community to learn their worth and provide for themselves.

The speakers for this meeting will be Steve Walker and Brian Butler who are both docents at the USS Midway Museum and will be sharing “The Midway Story.” They will discuss the Battle of Midway, provide a summary of the aircraft carrier Midway’s active duty history from 1945 to Desert Storm, and a virtual tour through the USS Midway Museum. Steve is a retired top gun pilot and Brian joined the Navy in the late 60’s, serving on two aircraft carriers.

The speaker for this meeting will be Dr. Alain Lescart who will be discussing common themes and archetypes in science and fantasy fiction books and movies. Dr. Alain Lescart joined PLNU in 2005 as a professor of French and world literature. He also teaches two special classes on science fiction and fantasy literature. The speaker for this meeting will be Rotary District 5340 Governor Don Fipps. Don Fipps has been a Rotarian for 17 years and is a member of the Rotary Club of Del Mar where he was president 2018-19. Don attended California Polytechnical State University in San Luis Obispo, majoring in Biochemistry and graduated in 1977. He was subsequently commissioned in the United States Army through ROTC. Don retired from the Army in 1997 as Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Services Corps. He also has an MS in Biology from Bowling Green State University. After working for the American Red Cross in several locations, an independent blood center in Sacramento and finally the University of California San Diego Health, Don retired in 2018.
Don married Donna McIlwain in 1975 after meeting at Cal Poly. Together they raise Canine Companions service dog puppies.

Our speaker will be Ashley Champa, Activities Coordinator at PATH (People Assisting the Homeless)’s Valley Vista supportive housing site in Mission Valley. PATH's mission is to end homelessness for individuals, families and communities. They do this by building affordable housing and providing supportive services throughout California.

Club Meeting with Zero Waste Speaker

Our speaker for this meeting will be Maren Kavanagh, Community Education Coordinator for I Love A Clean San Diego. Maren will share ways individuals can reduce their impact on the environment. Everyone can make a difference! She will highlight simple steps people can take in their everyday lives; focusing on topics such as recycling and zero waste habits. She will also share opportunities to get involved with their cleanup efforts around San Diego!
To keep the meeting as zero waste as possible, please bring a reusable water bottle and reusable utensils.

Throughout her presentation she will weave in her own personal story and encourage discussion about what inclusion means to you.
